An old-established colony of griffon vultures, which had been abandoned since the end of the 80s, is currently found to be not just active but also very dynamic.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-3808\" src=\"https:\/\/edozoume.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/221568089_10159361662148482_3285538637926167616_n.jpg\" alt=\" width=\"400\" height=\"267\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Eight to nine nests have been registered this year in the area, through the systematic monitoring carried out by the Hellenic Ornithological Society (HOS) in the framework of the LIFE-IP 4 NATURA project.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, one of this year\u2019s breeding birds in the Empesos area is &#8220;Yiannis&#8221;, the only griffon vulture survivor from last year&#8217;s catastrophic poisoning incident in Kleisoura area. Yiannis had been banded with a satellite transmitter and a ring by the Management Body of Messolonghi lagoon \u2013 Akarnanika Mountains before its release.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-3810\" src=\"https:\/\/edozoume.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/220349397_10159361662213482_6708216458524514720_n.jpg\" alt=\" width=\"400\" height=\"267\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>This news demonstrates in a most profound way that raptors\u2019 long-established colonies &#8211; territories must be considered as potentially active and that we must manage them as such.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A very promising event is taking place in the Empesos area (Mountain Valtos), in Aitoloakarnania, Greece.
