The World Environment Day was celebrated this year in Athens on Sunday, June 5 in the Pedion tou Areos Garden in a special event organized by the Regional Authority of Attica. Τhe event allowed the public to participate in various actions and to be informed about environmental issues.

The LIFE-IP 4 NATURA project was there of course, as the Region of Attica is one of the project partners, having the opportunity to showcase not only the Natura 2000 network and the importance of protected areas, but also other actions in the specific subject.

Representatives of the LIFE-IP 4 NATURA project partners, on the occasion of the second photo competition “Click at Nature” that ended a few days ago, had the opportunity to talk of the importance of the project and the actions that have been carried out so far.

At the event, a video was shown with the impressive photos that were distinguished in the competition, while at the same time all visitors had the opportunity for a magical virtual tour of the nature of Ymittos through virtual reality glasses.

The open discussion that followed on the main stage of the event was opened by Antigoni Goufa, executive of the Environment Directorate of the Attica Region, who referred to the work the Region has done in the field of biodiversity, while biologist Vangelis Paravas spoke on behalf of the Green Fund, partner and co-sponsor of the LIFE-IP 4 NATURA project.

The scientific coordinator of the project, Ioannis Mitsopoulos, General Director of the Natural Environment and Climate Change Agency, spoke about the importance of the project and its development in the coming years, and Yorgos Melissourgos, WWF Greece’s policy officer for protected areas, referred to the success of the recent “Click at Nature” photo competition, which gathered more than 4,600 photos from Natura 2000 sites all over Greece.
